Health Care IT/Data Management

CHIR is at the forefront of this developing field and is involved on several fronts, demonstrating the importance of using Health Information Technology to improve population health.

Arizona HealthQuery(AZHQ) AZHQ Factsheet

History of AZHQ

Recognizing the need for an approach to health research that reduces the time involved in collecting data for a particular project, CHIR began developing a massive relational database of health information on millions of Arizonans in 1999. The AZHQ data system is unequalled in its ability to provide vast amounts of routinely updated health care information, linking patients across health care providers and systems over time.

Today, dozens of data partners voluntarily contribute administrative health data to AZHQ, including the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (the Arizona Medicaid program), federally qualified community health centers, the major private and public health systems in the state, and self-insured employers. The Arizona Department of Health Services also contributes data to AZHQ on all hospital discharges, immunizations, births, and deaths.

Contents of AZHQ Data Warehouse

The AZHQ data warehouse consists of a set of normalized relational data tables comprised of tables containing:

  • Claim header information (i.e., visit level information)
  • Claim detail information (i.e., service level information)
  • Provider information
  • Diagnosis codes
  • Patient Medicaid eligibility and health plan information

Current Community Health Studies Using AZHQ

Health through Action (Subaward with Asian Pacific Community in Action)

The goal of this project is to develop a data system to track the health status and needs of the Asian/Pacific Islander community and their utilization of health services.

Carondelet Project (Sponsor - Carondelet Community Trust)

The goal of this project is to produce two regional community health needs assessments by collecting administrative and clinical data from Carondelet Health Network (CHN) and two of its community partners, and analyzing and aggregating the data for tracking pre-identified outcome measures for issues relating to access to care, chronic health conditions and cost of care.

Evaluation of El Rio Community Health Center's Pharmacy-Based Diabetes Disease Management Program (Sponsor – Heinz Family Foundation)

The goals of this project are to calculate the return on investment and determine the quality and cost effectiveness of the pharmacy-based diabetes disease management program administered by El Rio Community Health Center

Evaluation of Fall Prevention Programs (Sponsor - Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust)

This project performs the cost-effectiveness analysis to evaluate several fall prevention programs, sponsored by the.

Emergency Department Utilization of Children from St. Joe's Crockett and Osborn School Clinics (Sponsor – St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center)

The goal of this project is to examine patterns of emergency department utilization for children who are receiving primary care services through St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center's Crockett School Clinic and Osborn School Clinic using data from the hospital and Arizona HealthQuery

Trauma Publication Collaboration (Sponsor - Scottsdale Healthcare)

The goal of this project is to collaborate with the hospital system to produce scholarly publications on the hospital's trauma center operations

Validation of Rules-based Software Program (Sponsor - UNDx, LLC)

This project, in partnership with UNDx, LLC, is to validate and refine the model of detecting "probable undiagnosed psychiatric and addictive illnesses" using the Arizona HealthQuery (AZHQ) database.

Phoenix Healthcare Value Measurement Initiative (PHVMI) (Sponsor – PHVMI Collaborative)

This project’s goal is to measure the efficiency in processes of care used to define quality health care. The PHVMI collaboration supports a national initiative charged with determining whether large employers can work together to increase their buying power to improve a region’s cost and quality of health care.
